Big Idea: Integrity Creates Safety Ever bought a car? Then you know you have to be careful...we were looking at getting out of the minivan phase recently and went to look at a smaller, more economical car. Even though our van wasn't going to be worth much in the trade, we were looking at an amazing deal, but I just couldn't pull the trigger. Later I got on Carfax and looked up the report on the 25,000 mile, 1 year old car we were looking at...only to find that it was a rental that had been in an accident. Not the story we had been told at the dealership. I am sure am glad I didn't buy that car! And boy would I have been mad if I had driven it home and found that out after the fact. Now not all car deals are shady like that, we've dealt with some really great salesmen and dealerships. But, sometimes dealerships are a little lacking in the area of integrity. I like to call integrity, "Doing the right thing when no one else is looking." And that can be tough sometimes. Paul deals with this whole issue of integrity as he lays out the guidelines of leadership in 1 Timothy 3. He's pretty clear that leadership is an awesome place to be, but without integrity it's a dead end. Take a moment to read it and find out that Paul points out everything from having a good reputation, to pure sexual relationships, to being someone that takes care of their family comprises integrity and leadership. But I think the biggest thing that I got out of this passage is the reality that integrity creates safety. When you are a person of integrity others can feel safe around you. Safe to ask for help. Safe to share their struggles. Safe to live. If you have ever been burned by someone without integrity you know what I'm talking about. No one will ever be 100% perfect, but living by the principles that Paul lays out will go a long way in creating a safe place for others. Family Challenge: Take some time as a family to talk about what integrity looks like for each member of the family. Come to an agreement to hold each other accountable in these areas. Pray together as a family that you can create a safe place by being a family of integrity.
