Big Idea :: God Desires Authenticity I would rather have a real $1 bill than a fake $100 bill any day. There's just something about real money...it works. It's the same reason that although wax figures in a museum are amusing...I would never become best friends with one of them. Real is just better. But being real goes much deeper than just having skin and breathing. People can be real human beings, but completely fake when it comes to their life. Authenticity is described as being "not false or copied, but genuine and real." Is that the way I live my life? Is that the way I follow Jesus? Is that the way others view my relationship with God? I definitely strive for it to be what way. After all, Paul takes an entire chapter to Timothy to remind him that God desires authenticity. Paul states that some "will act religious [spiritual], but they will reject the power that could make them godly." Spirituality alone can't bring us into authentic relationship with God. It has to become a heart issue. Paul even gives the examples of Jannes and Jambres, two of Pharaoh's magicians. They were spiritual people...they just didn't have an authentic relationship with the one true God. They were the ones that competed against Moses and then according to Jewish history left with the Israelites. But above all of that, they were very instrumental leaders in creating the Golden Calf in the desert for the Israelites to worship. They were spiritual and religious...just about the wrong things. The question is, how many people today worship the wrong god(s)? They may be religious and spiritual, but they have missed an authentic relationship with the one true God. Paul says that the fruits of these such people are selfishness, pride disregard of God, disobedience to parents, ungratefulness, lack of love, unforgiving, slanderous, lack of self-control, betrayal, recklessness, deception, and love of pleasure. But once again, Paul doesn't leave us without an answer. He reminds us in verse 16-17 that God has given us His Word to reach deep into our souls and bring authenticity into our relationship with Him. He didn't do it so we could just theologically pick it apart and have a lot of head knowledge, rather to "correct us when we are wrong and [teach] us do what is right...and prepare and equip [us] to do every good work." Now that's authentic! And authenticity leads to faith, patience, love, and endurance. Those are the fruits I crave. And only through an open, honest, authentic relationship with Christ will I ever produce them. Family Challenge: Talk about people you know that are "authentic." List the characteristics that make them that way. Continue journaling...it's a great way to allow God's Word to encourage you in authenticity.
