You may or may not have seen the TV Drama "Lie to Me" featuring Cal Lightman, a lie expert. He detects when criminals are lying and solves cases. The show sets out to prove that "The truth is written all over our faces." As I was thinking about this show and its implications while studying the book of 1 John the other day it got me to thinking. And that is how our next 4 week series was born. Over and over we see the word "lie" or "liar" or an implication of it used in this book. And basically we find that John points out four lies that we tell ourselves that can ultimately destroy our relationship with Jesus. The first one is pretty simple, but yet holds so much weight. "I am not a sinner." It's when we believe this lie that we fail to see sin as a big deal and don't allow room for Jesus to help us with sin. We see in 1 John 1:5 that God is light and in Him is no darkness. So we understand that God is without sin, but what about us? It's interesting how John pairs up the falsehoods that this lie creates with the solution and truth to combat it...
Verses 1:6 / 1:7
6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth.
FALSE: I am in relationship with God...and don't need to worry about sin.
7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
TRUE: When I live in the light, I have relationship with God and other believers and Jesus cleanses me from sin.
Verses 1:8&1:10 / 1:9&2:1
8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth...10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts...
FALSE: I don't have any sin.
9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. 2 He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.
TRUE: I do sin and when I repent and confess it, Jesus forgives me.
Verses 2:4 / 2:5
4 If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth.
FALSE: I know God, but don't need to follow his commandments.
5 But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him.
TRUE: When we obey God we show that we truly love and follow Him.
Verses 2:15-16 / 2:17
15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 16 For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.
FALSE: I can satisfy my cravings by loving the things of this world.
17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.
TRUE: The world fades away, but God and life with Him is eternal.
So what does this all boil down to? I am a sinner and needs repentance and God's grace daily! Without it, I become a hypocrite and fail to walk in truth.
Family Challenge: Talk about some times that each of you have failed to acknowledge the sin in your life and what the consequences were. Then talk about how God's grace can daily set us free from sin.
