Big Idea: God is Personal Names...they're kind of important. We know people by them. We use them to describe things. For instance, my name means fair and handsome...I like it. Take a moment to look up what your name means. Anyway, back to the subject at hand. Names are a big deal and we often throw around the greatest name in history without much thought to it. God. It's just three letters, but it has so much wrapped up in it. In Exodus 4.13-15 Moses is talking to God at a burning bush. Moses, who is reluctant to take on the task of delivering the Israelites from Egypt asks God what His name is. After all he needs a name to give the people. And I love how God responds..."I am that I am." In the original language it was written "Ehyeh asher ehyeh" which literally means, "I shall be that I shall be." Wow! What a statement! God understands the fact that we all have different perceptions of who He is and He made it clear that he can't be defined by just one name. So take a look at the list below of names that God is referred to in the Bible. This isn't an all inclusive list. What I think is so amazing is that God is so personal. There are times when we need God to be creator and there are times when we need God to be all sufficient. He is all of those things, but when we call him by name it becomes personal! I encouraged the students to start calling him by name according to what they are facing. For example, "Dear Healer...I'm facing some pretty tough sickness in my life right now..." So take a moment to get to know God. Who is he? Get to know his name! El – Mighty and Strong El Shaddai – All Sufficient Adonai – Master Jehovah Jireh – Provider Jehovah Ropheka – Healer Jehovah Nissi – Our Banner Jehovah M'Kaddesh – Holy Jehovah Shalom – Peace Jehovah Tsidkenu – Righteousness Jehovah Rohi – Shepherd Jehovah Shammah – The Lord is Present Jehovah Sabaoth – Commander Jehovah Elohim - Creator El Elyon – Most High Shaphat – Judge El Roi – Sees Kanna – Jealous Palet – Deliverer Yeshua – Savior Gaol – Redeemer Magen – Shield Eyaluth – Strength El Olam – Everlasting Abba - Father
Challenge: As a family take some time to talk about how you need to see God personally. Write down the name and stick it to a mirror or some place you will see it daily as a reminder of who God is personally in your life.
