Big Idea: I Can Love Because Christ First Loved Me I grew up hating to see Spinach, Broccoli, or mushrooms on my plate...those were not supposed to make it from the ground to the table. I just did not like them! However, over the years, something changed. Now give me a hamburger smothered in grilled mushrooms, or a plate of cooked spinach, or a nice heaping pile of steamed broccoli and I will go to town. I actually love those foods now! You see something changed in my taste buds and what I used to hate, I now love. And in this second week of Lie to Me, we realized that John applied this same principle when it comes to love and hate towards people. It is clearly stated in 1 John 2.9 that if anyone claims to be "living in the light, but hates a brother or sister [in Christ], that person is still living in darkness." Later on in chapter 3 verse 15 he compares a person that hates a brother or sister in Christ to a murderer. He then continues to talk about the connection we must make between word and action when it comes to loving. But then in chapter 4 he brings the good news! He reminds us of the immense love that God has shown us through the sacrifice of Jesus. He goes on to show us that because of this love that has been shown to us we should be able to understand and mobilize our love toward others. And then, just as if he was reading my mind he addresses the fact that we live in a sinful world that pushes hate on us constantly and reminds us that this whole hate to love thing is a growing process. In verse 17 he says that, "As we live in God, our love grows more perfect." You see, we are called to love not hate. But this is a process that only happens when we live and breathe in God. It's easy to hate...it's our human nature. Whether it's gossip or slander, or maybe shunning or silently holding it all in...hate is the easier way. But God has called us to a greater way of life. And as we live IN Him, our love can grow. And when others see a community of believers that truly love each other and take care of each other's burdens...they will be drawn to the same love that created that community within us.
