Ever had one of those threads on your shirt that if you pull the whole shirts starts coming apart? Shirts threads are important...they keep our clothes together which in turn keep us covered! We are starting a new series in T6 called "Threads" over the next few weeks in which we will be exploring friendships and relationships and what they should look like. This past Sunday we kicked it off with talking about the single most important thread strand in our life...Jesus. You see our relationship with Jesus affects every other relationship in our life. The problem is, that we sometimes don't keep this relationship together and it causes our other friendships to suffer. And let's be honest there are times when we just don't feel connected to Jesus. Maybe it stems from doubts, or maybe he doesn't show up like we expect him to, or maybe we just choose not to acknowledge him in our life. The disciples struggled with this whole thing of accepting Jesus and understanding his character. You see Jesus had told them over and over during his 3+ years with them that the scriptures stated that he would die and rise from the dead to bring salvation to all mankind. But for some reason they never got it. And then when it happens they refuse to believe. We countless times in the Gospels where the disciples are in disbelief when Jesus rises from the dead. In fact Jesus even walks and talks with some of his disciples and they do not recognize him. It's during this very interaction that we hear Jesus call them "foolish people" because they did not believe and had not paid attention to the prophecies concerning his death and resurrection (Luke 25.25-27). And in John 20:9 we find that the disciples just did not understand from Scripture what was going on. There was a disconnect! Their understanding and relationship with Jesus had been limited. They wanted a powerful king to show, but Jesus had other plans. So the question is...are you looking for Jesus? Sometimes we want Jesus to be someone/something that he is not and other times we never connect with His character because we are not in His Word. However, he is real! Are we looking for him in everyday life? Do we hear Him through His Word? Do we see him through creation? Do we feel Him through the Holy Spirit's presence? This crucial thread must be maintained.
Family Challenge: What are your doubts about Jesus? Talk about a time that Jesus was with you, but you didn't recognize till after the fact. What can you do this week to connect with Jesus on a more intimate level.
